Now to my thoughts for the week. I have been reading Fredrik Bachman's, My Friends this month. One scene stopped me cold and got me thinking.
Three fourteen-year-old boys are lying on the floor, trading their favorite superhero lines back and forth — the way kids do when they're comforting each other without quite knowing how to say what they mean. Spider-Man. Iron Man. Wonder Woman. But the one that made me put the book down was from The Flash:
"Life doesn't give us purpose. We give life purpose."
A teenager, half-joking, quoting a comic book character on the floor of a bedroom — and somehow landing on something a lot of us spend our 60s circling.
Purpose doesn't show up on its own anymore
Here's what I mean. When I was working, purpose showed up on its own — deadlines, a team counting on me, a job title that answered the question "what do you do?" Retirement doesn't hand you that. Nobody assigns you purpose on day one. You have to give your days purpose, on purpose, over and over.
That's honestly the whole reason this newsletter exists. It's why I started writing here in October 2024 — not because retirement handed me something to say, but because I decided it would.
