What I Know Now

This week, my husband and I celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary. Wow — how did that happen? When I look back, it’s hard to believe how quickly the years have passed — filled with ups and downs, laughter and tears, sickness and health.

I know that not everyone has the same journey or a partner who walks beside them for decades. But what I’ve learned is this: long relationships are a mix of challenges and beautiful peaks — and it’s those peaks that make it all worthwhile.

My daughter-in-law, Mallory, introduced us to a fun tradition we’ve come to love. After every big event or travel adventure, we reflect on three things: the Peak, the Pit, and the Most Embarrassing Moment.

After 37 years together, here’s what we came up with:

Peak: Raising two wonderful children who are now loving parents themselves — and who still want us in their lives. That, to me, is the ultimate success.

Pit: Health challenges. My husband’s prostate cancer and the surgery that followed were tough chapters, but we’re grateful every day that he’s cancer-free.

Most Embarrassing Moment: Let’s just say that one stays between us. 😉

After all these years, one of my favorite rituals happens every night. I go to bed early, and my husband still tucks me in and says goodnight. It’s such a simple act, but it reminds me daily what love looks like — quiet, consistent, and kind.

So take a moment with your special person. Reflect on your shared journey — the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Never take them for granted, and always tell them you love them. That's what I Know Now!
